My Sister's Keeper

I'm not so sure how I feel about this. I just heard today that they are taking this....On of my favorite books of all time.

And they are making a movie out of it. It has a good cast of actors...Cameron Diaz is playing the part of the mom with Alec Baldwin playing the dad (not sure how I feel about that). Sofia Vassilieva plays Kate, the older sister and Abigail Breslin plays Anna the younger sister. I do enjoy Abigail Breslin and I LOVE Sofia (she plays the oldest daughter in the tv show Medium). Oh and it looks like Joan Cusak will be in this as well. Not sure what role she'll be playing.

But really this is one of my favorite books and I wonder if they can do it justice. I think that they will have an easier time of it because it is something that "could" happen. I hope that the screen play is well written and I hope Mrs. Picoult has a big say in how things are done.

Do you have any favorite books that they've made into movies? Did they do a good job or not?

Honestly, I'm not a huge reader anymore, sadly. I used to read voraciously in high school, and then I went to college where I didn't have time.

I would love for them to make US Weekly into a movie. That would be awesome.

Oh I really liked that book too. We shall see how they do. I am pretty skeptical, movies are rarely as good as the books.
I did think the Anne of Green Gables series is one of the few that lived up the book, at least the first one.
And I must admit that I LOVED the Harry Potter movies AND the books.

Several years ago, I went to see the Scarlet Letter w/Demi Moore. Not because I was a fan of hers and dying to see the movie, but because there was nothing else I wanted to see. It was a stinker by the way. Anyway, in the opening credits it said it was "loosely based on the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne". I laughed out loud and knew I was in for a treat.

It's always dicey when they make a movie from a favorite book. I haven't read this book but perhaps I should (before the movie ruins it!)

I have never read that book, but have heard a couple of times in the last week that it is a good one. I don't like to cry in books so I hesitate to read it.

I seem to always prefer the books over the movies...maybe I just prefer my imagination over millions of hollywood dollars. Who knows!

I absolutely loved this book too. I actually have enjoyed all of Jodi Picoult's books. I've never, ever seen a movie that's as good as the book but I know I"ll go see it anyway.

I think as an avid reader, it's best to go into the theatre version with very low expectations. One of the best screen adaptations I've seen (IMO) is The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.

From what I've seen most movies do not do teh book justice because they only have about 2 hours to sum up the entire book... But The Notebook and Romeo and Juliet (Leo and Claire Danes version) were great. So hopefully this will be good too :)

Most of the time, I find that the movie never measures up to the book. Something about our own imaginations for the characters that Hollywood just doesn't do justice with.

However, that being said, Marley and Me exceeded my expectations. But then again, it is a "fluff" movie and I'm all about the "fluff"

It is my opinion that the movies are NEVER better than the books.

I am a big time reader and am usually disappointed by the movie. I like the detail that a book gives, and my imagination is better any old day than some movie.

I vented a few weeks ago about how they totally messed up SECRET LIFE OF BEEs, but I think they did a fantastic job w/ MARTIAN CHILD

I will be very interested in seeing this movie though, LOVED the book

Love this book and author. I wonder who's playing the lawyer? And the case worker? (Please tell me I've got the right Picoult book!)

It's interesting to see Cameron Diaz as a mom. Maybe because I just watched My Best Friend's Wedding last night. :o) And I'm definately hesitant about Alec Baldwin, too.

As far as books to movies......mostly, books are better. Spasm's right about Secret Life of Bees, but Cottage Cheese was right about The Notebook. (I actually read the book after seeing the movie and liked the movie more.)

After almost every one of her books, I've thought it would make a great movie. Done right. They can't leave out details.

I've never read it. . . I've heard that she's a good author though. I may have to pick that up.

And Harry Potter. I can't stand the movies. My husband hates watching them with me. I sit there and announce what critical bit of information or story element that they have left out.

I have this book but haven't read it yet. I usually like the movies they turn into books, but it's hard for them to get every little detail in the movie. Plus you miss what the characters are thinking in the movies, which is why I love books. I guess we'll see, huh?

I just picked that book up at Borders last weekend. Everyone just raves about it. Now I can't wait to get started on it!

Actually, Alec Baldwin is not the father part----I just saw the preview today and didn't know the actor that played the father part.

It looked good, but usually movies always ruin books.

The way we see them in our own heads are always much better than what someone else sees, I think....

my favorite book of all time is FABLEHAVEN!

they haven't made it into a movie yet, but they have the rights to do it and it looks like it will happen soon.

i'm worried about it too. i want all my favorite parts to be in it and not have it skip important scenes. so i feel for ya. hope they do good.

Well I love MANY movies that were books first, but I don't read them so I am not sure you'd want to have them listed.

I never read this book, but my sister did and described it to me in detail one day. This is going to be a gut-renching tear jerker!! This whole situation pissed me off, I could not believe hoe much! But I do love Abigail and my sister will prob want to see it, so I'd go and know I am gonna cry AND be pissed!

One of my favorite movies of all time, A Room With A View, is one of the only movies I've seen that keeps to the book almost exactly. They even took a good portion of the dialogue, word for word, from the book. You can read the book (and love it) and then see the movie w/o any disappointment at all. In fact, I think the movie enhances the book with perfect music and scenery and actors.

But that is the exceptoin to the rule. Usually movies just screw things up.

Twilight Books? - fun.
Twilight Movie? - boo.

Memoirs of a Geisha? - one of my favorite books of all time.
Movie? - very decent job, beautiful cinematography, great casting... but still can't come anywhere near the book so far as sharing heaps of cultural information and drawing me deeply into their world goes.

Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca - AMAZZING.
The old school movie? I really enjoy watching it and wish that they would make a new version. So bad. (though, it would probably fall short as well, I'm willing to have them give it a try!)
