Holiday Parenting Fail

Our kitchen the afternoon of Easter after we have come home from church....

I have made the kids dump all of the candy from the Easter egg hunt into one communal bowl so that I can horde it all for myself keep an eye on how much they are consuming. The kids are picking up the plastic eggs and opening them to see what is inside.

I inform said children that the only chocolate inside the plastic eggs are the malted goodness that are Robin's Eggs. They are all a little bummed out by this...especially Jona.

I then give further information that the candy in the plastic eggs is still good candy. Jolly Rancher jellybeans, SweetTart jellybeans, SourPatch jellybeans and sour gummy rabbits.

The next words are the actual words that come flying out of my mouth with all four children standing right there...

"I don't buy bad candy."

Jillian, my 8 year old, pipes up immediately...

"Wait...YOU bought the candy???"

Good one Shanna. So trying to think quickly, on my feet, with a mouth full of chocolate I answer...

"Why yes. I buy the candy and Easter Bunny hides it."

I'm not sure if Jillian bought into that or not but she said "Okay" and continued shoving the sugary goodness into her mouth.

I swear....I am not going to be allowed to say anything about Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy or Leprechauns around any of my grandchildren. I'll just have to learn to be the sweet, silent type...

Not sure how great I'll be able to pull that off either.

This morning, Aidan (just turned 6) turned to Christian, hugged him, and said, "Thank you, Easter bunny." Then he turned to me, hugged me, and said, "Thank you, Easter bunny." Neither one of us were sure how to react. It was kind of funny.

When Ethan lost his second tooth, he found the first tooth sitting on my dresser. He quickly put two and two together. I'm a bad imaginary fairy also. Sigh.

I had to keep reminding my older children not to say anything, so my 8 year old could believe one more year. Boy those older kids really do blow it for the younger ones. LOL

luckily i don't have to worry about that . . . yet. this was probably the last holiday that i'll be able to buy all of the stuff while ellie is with me. she still doesn't put it all together yet, she just knows there is candy everywhere.

and erin's story is pretty much mine - i found my letter to the tooth fairy in my mom's room. i never said anything to her, though. i think i still played along.

Way to go.

I fell asleep watching a movie the night before Easter and didn't hide the eggs. I told Dillon that the EB could barely find us (we were in Pine Valley) and he only had to time to bring the Easter baskets. He bought it.

Chloee is still young enough that she didn't even catch the wrappers in my bedroom of the chocolate that DIDN'T end up in her basket.

Although, Luke on the other hand wasn't so brilliant. Thank goodness she didn't catch on!

Funny

I was shocked when a 4 year old at church told me that her mom & dad hide the eggs. I was hoping my 9 year old wasn't listening.

My kids believe like nothing else and I'm kind of tired of it. Is that horrible? I told my oldest this year about the Easter Bunny. She already knew about the tooth Fairy, but she is holding onto Santa with all she has...
