The Placenta lady

Afterbirth: It's What's For Dinner

When I saw the above link on Gurrbonzo's blog I HAD to share it here. Had to.

Make sure to watch the video at the end of the article. (If you think you can stomach it. I didn't think it was all that bad. I mean I watch CSI and get squeamish there but not with this video.)

I love Joel Stein.

Gurrbonzo is one of the Young Women who I had in my group years ago when I was serving in the Young Women presidency. She served a mission, got married, had a baby while going to law school, got banned from parking at BYU, moved across the country, and is now studying for her bar exam. She is also where I got the "discuss" in my Fake Nails? post. She amazes me. And cracks me up. She doesn't post often but when she does it is totally worth it.

The crazy stuff people do. Crazy. And I'm not talking about Gurrbonzo here. I'm talking about The Placenta Lady and her clients.

I just don't know if I am brave enough. . . The name is almost too much.

I didn't read your friend's blog, but I know of Joel Stein's wife and her placenta imbibing. She had it made into pills, right? To me, that would be okay. But cooking it up and eating it like a roast or something...GROSS.

Sick, sick, sick! :) I love that I've had 4 kids, cleaned up countless nasty messes and got a little sick reading that article! At least it was entertaining reading, right?

Okay, the whole pill thing is a whole lot better than other things I have heard of. Makes sense that animals do it- why shouldn't we?? But no! I saw an article about making it into a dinner and all sorts of weirdness! I guess my stomach is stronger than most cause I found this facinating... but I don't think I will be standing in line to do this anytime soon.

Ok, I watched it, and all I can say is, "Ewwww, Gross!!!!!" Animals do all kinds of disgusting things, like licking their butts, eating their young, peeing in the same water they are drinking from, etc... I think we should remember that we are NOT animals, and go from there.

I have heard of eating your placenta from my oldest sister recently and didn't believe her so I had to Google it! People in some countries eat it RAW!!! So disgusting. I can't stand the smell of liver let alone eat it, I can not imagine! That is what modern medicine is for if you ask me! Sign me up for some Lexapro and whatever the Doc has for beter milk supply!! My OB is always facinated by the placenta, he always shows it to me and made me touch it once. Glad I was still medicated from giving birth, or there may have been another mess to clean up in there!

There is NO way I would do something like this!

if i knew it worked and i got postpartum i might do the whole pill thing.... maybe... but NEVER would i eat it just raw. in fact i couldn't be there when the lady was cooking it and stuff. i'd have to pretend it wasn't actually a placenta pill.

I had one lady in OB that initially was refusing for anyone to cut the umbilibal cord, and she didn't want us to remove the placenta...after a brief health lesson she complied but wanted to take the placenta home so she could place it under a tree she wanted to plant.
It's one thing to deal with these things in the hospital...but to bring it home? or eat it!!! but, to each his own!

Bahahah!

a) you were a great YW leader

b) I'm kind of sorry you have to associate me with the afterbirth for dinner phenomenon :)

c) I think it's gross, but pills are definitely better than a placenta steak. And I actually know a few people who have buried it by a tree, and though I probably won't do it myself, it makes sense that traditions have developed around doing something with something so nutrient-rich. But, hilarious.

Okay, I'm all shades of weirded out right now. But at the same time, I'm wondering how one gets into the placenta-as-pharmacology field.
